Van Dijk plays Liverpool’s quadruple chances after Spurs win

Virgil van Dijk says he is not entertaining any talk of a potential Liverpool quadruple this season despite the Reds’ impressive first half of the campaign.

Arne Slot’s team beat Spurs 6-3 on Sunday and are currently on top of both the Premier League and the Champions League, as well as in the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup.

It has been a strong start to life under Slot but the Liverpool captain insists he will not be carrying too much at this stage of the season.

After the 6-3 win at Tottenham, the Dutchman said: “Are you talking about a quadruple in this case? Well, I think I have already given answers many times that we do not think what is there in May. We want to be up there in May, but we have seen how difficult it is.

“But, listen, we focus on what’s next in front of us and that’s the only thing. I’m not being dragged into any conversation about potentially winning a trophy or two or three or four.

“It’s all about being there every game in front of us. At the moment, there was Spurs, a tough one, but we played a very good game. And then it’s Leicester’s turn, and that’s the only team we have influence over as well.”

However, Van Dijk, whose current contract at Anfield is set to expire in the summer, was not surprised by a run that has seen them lose just once in all competitions this term.

“No (we didn’t surprise ourselves),” Van Dijk said.

“Yes, of course, I think we only had one addition to the squad in terms of Federico (Chiesa), and this group of players have been playing together for quite a long time.

“The experience is there, the quality is there, I saw it every day.

“Obviously it’s a surprise where such a big change is happening with Jurgen (Klopp) being replaced by the new manager, and there will always be questions, but I still had so much confidence in my team that we could definitely compete at the moment, from -lowest at the top of the Premier League. So we have to stay consistent.”

Regarding his contract situation with Liverpool, Van Dijk added: “There is no deadline.

“I will see what the future holds. I focus fully on Leicester.”
