Trade Schools across the country are fighting to hire qualified teachers with an increase in interest

Trade schools across the country are struggling to hire qualified instructors at a time when more young people are interested in their careers in qualified deals.

The US Department of Education reports at least 26 countries have a shortage of career and technical education teachers (CTE) for the school year 2025-2026. School managers say they must be creative in order to support programs to work.

In Boulder, Colorado, APEX, Commercial School in the Boulder Valley School neighborhood, has been looking for a car teacher since April.

“This year, we’re still looking for a car service teacher. We’re looking for April,” said Director Ming Shade. “We are recruiting from our partners in the industry and in fact we had to go to our BVSD transport. Our fleet manager is actually teaching the course right now.”

That Fleet manager is Andrew Thompson, who stepped into the classroom just days before the start of the autumn semester.

“About a week before the start of the school, I called my boss and asked me if they would be interested in teaching this program,” Thompson said. “For the first time teaching; a ton of automotive experience. In fact, I took this collision program here in 2011 … back to high school.”

Thompson now teaches students how to inspect tires, brakes and electrical systems of a program focused on the preventive support of vehicles. He said the goal is to help students Get a job in the automotive industry.

“I just feel super happy to come back and give these children the opportunity,” said Thompson.

Shade hopes more professionals in the industry will consider moving to teaching, especially with the increase in the search for qualified deals.

“I hope that if someone may be on the edge and maybe think that they may want to be a teacher, it’s something he can look at,” Shade said.

The shortage is not limited to automotive programs. Culinary instructor Amber Graf said that experience in the real world was essential to become a teacher in her field.

At APEX, students from the high school in the culinary program complete a one -year accelerated course designed to prepare them for work in hospitality and nutrition or even become influential for food, said the Count.
