Sister Wives Recap: Christine says Robyn “planted” Meri into divorcing Kody

“When Robyn came into the family, she started talking about those other families where the first wife divorced her husband so he could legally marry the second wife and have the children legally,” Christine, 52, said on Sunday, Dec. 29, episode of the TLC series.

Christine claimed at this point she thought, “That’s a plant” and Robyn, 46, suggested she wanted Meri, 53, to do the same to her and her children.

“She mentioned it several times over the years that she was putting it on because she would like it to happen,” Christine said, adding, “I don’t think she felt it was planted on Meri. I think Meri felt it was her idea.” .

Meri legally married 55-year-old Kody in 1990. becoming his first wife. The plural family expanded in 1993 when Kody was spiritually married Janelle Brown. In 1994, Christine entered into a spiritual union with the patriarch.

When Robyn started dating Kody in 2010, she had three children from a previous marriage. Four years later, Meri and Kody were legally divorced He married Robyn and later he adopted his own children.

Although Christine alleged that this was Robyn’s plan, she denied the allegations. “The idea that I put an idea in Meri’s head is completely false,” Robyn said in Sunday’s episode. “I never said.”

He said: “I don’t know of anyone who divorced his first wife so that his second wife could have children. I’ve never even heard of such a thing.”

Elsewhere in the episode, Robyn said: “I’m sorry I’ve been on the gas some family members,” suggesting that his actions were misunderstood.

Janelle, on the other hand, admitted that Meri was wary of divorcing Kody in 2014. because of the dynamics of his family at that time.

“I was honestly speechless when (Meri) told us she was actually doing it because I thought Meri would never do this,” Janelle recalled. “I was already starting to see that there was a little bit of Kody’s crush on Robyn at that point, and I was worried.”

Robyn, however, insisted that it was never her intention to legally marry Kody, especially after her past divorce. He said it was Meri’s idea, and Meri said she initiated the procedure, but that she and Kody discussed it together.

“(Meri) had this idea in her head to legally propose marriage so that Kody could adopt my kids,” Robyn told viewers, saying, “I never even wanted to legally marry Kody.”

Robyn said she was “really grateful” that she “wasn’t going to legally marry” Kody because she “went through so much trauma in my last marriage with my legal divorce.”

He added: “I was very happy and satisfied with my spiritual marriage. I didn’t need anything else.”

Although Meri took steps to turn around her 2014 divorce, she didn’t think it would have such a big impact on her emotional state or her marriage to Kody.

“I doubt if he already had this plan in mind at the time, (saying), ‘If I can do this, it’s going to be an easy transition,'” Meri told the cameras, saying “in six months.” ” to sign the papers, Kody “stopped coming.”

She recalled being “heartbroken” when she went to the lawyers to sign the papers because she didn’t feel “emotionally supported” by the other wives or Kody.

“The logical part of me said, ‘No, you still have the spiritual side of marriage.’ Emotionally I felt like I was getting rid of the whole marriage,” explained Meri.It was very hard. And all the time I had to say to myself, ‘No, it’s not. We still have that spiritual marriage.’

Kody admitted that he hadn’t considered severing the legal ties as a big thing. “I think we were mixing up the legal paperwork,” he said. “Meri and I, after that divorce, left Robyn and went to dinner together. I gave him a special ring and we probably went home and made love”.

Meri and Kody remained in a spiritual union almost 10 more yearsbut their relationship never recovered after their legal split. (Meri confirmed her split from Kody in January 2023 after months of speculation. Christine and Janelle, meanwhile, left Kody in 2021 and 2022, respectively.)

Looking back, Meri said their divorce and decision to buy a bed and breakfast in Utah (where her mother lived until her death) was Kody’s way of distancing herself from their marriage.

“I think it’s interesting that I’m living in the house here because that wasn’t the plan when I bought the house,” Meri said in the episode after moving from Arizona to Utah for good. “I know Kody felt that way. I think other members of the family did too.’

He denied it was his “escape plan,” saying, “I think the escape plan was that legal divorce. Let’s be real, that was his escape plan.”
