“Many” fans “don’t understand the situation” at Tottenham, says boss

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou said he “can’t change style and change” his style after full-time boos were heard in his side’s 6-3 home defeat by Liverpool in the Premier League on on Sunday.

Despite scoring two more goals than any other team in the top flight, Spurs are 11th in the table and eight points adrift of fourth place, having taken a point from their last four games in -home championship.

“I think I have been really, very patient in the last 18 months, answering the same question over and over again,” Postecoglou responded to a suggestion that his team could adopt less cavalier tactics.

“If people want me to change my approach, it won’t change. We are doing it for a reason because we think it will help us be successful.”

Tottenham vs Liverpool ‘a bridge too far’

Tottenham’s results this season included a 3-2 defeat against Brighton & Hove Albion and a 4-3 defeat at home to Chelsea after leading 2-0 in both games.

They were 5-1 up at one point during their run away from the leaders, although Postecoglou had 10 players absent through injury and illness.

“It was a bridge too far for us, in terms of you could say we were missing a bit of energy and the ability to really compete with (Liverpool) at the same level,” said Postecoglou.

“If people don’t understand the circumstances we’re in right now and the challenges we have as a team and squad… I get the idea that people think I should flip the switch and change and this somehow it makes us different. But it is what it is – I will continue to stay focused on trying to build this team to be the team we want.

“In the meantime, we will have to accept that there will be challenges. Who knows? Maybe some of (the fans) actually understand the situation we are in right now.

“It seems that many do not do this. In the context of what we are trying to do and where we are, I hope they see what we are trying to build here, because I really believe it will give the fans and the club what they want. But that’s up to them.”

Postecoglou: ‘Others to judge’

Postecoglou emphasized that fan support is “important” and was bullish when asked about his position.

“We had a shorter turnaround than any team we’ve played so far, whether it was here or in Europe,” he added. “I couldn’t rest or rotate the players.

“If you’re saying that (11th place) means I’m not doing a good job and somehow I should be uncomfortable, that’s for others to judge.”
