President-elect Donald Trump asked Supreme Court Delaying the law that could ban TikTok until after he takes office. In an amicus brief, Trump’s lawyer D. John Sauer wrote that the future president wants a chance to find a solution to the problem “through political means.”
A law requiring the ban or sale of TikTok will come into effect January 19, 2025One day before Trump’s inauguration. The brief calls the ban date “regrettably defeated” and says the incoming president should have more time to work on a deal with TikTok. TikTok’s legal team cited similar concerns in requests to delay the ban. The brief also mentions Trump’s “deal-making” experience and his social media platform Truth Social.
“Only President Trump has the excellent deal-making ability, electoral mandate and political will to negotiate a resolution to save the platform while addressing the national security concerns expressed by the Administration, concerns that President Trump himself has acknowledged,” Sauer wrote.
Trump’s stance on TikTok is very different from what he took during his first term got the app banned in 2020. Microsoft also floated the idea of ”a deal, a proper deal, so the United States Treasury can get a lot of money,” without explaining exactly how that deal would work.
President Trump reversed his opinion on the TikTok ban during his second campaign. He said from CNBC Squawk Box banning TikTok in March “would make Facebook bigger and I consider Facebook to be the enemy of the people, along with a lot of media.”
