Cristiano Ronaldo and Jose Mourinho are among those who paid tribute to Porto Champions League winner Jorge Costa, who died 53, after suffering cardiac arrest at the Portuguese club training place.
Costa, who led Porto for the glory of the UEFA Cup in 2003 and a triumph of the Champions League a year later under Mourinho, was in his second season serving as the football director of the Portugal Liga club. He was quick to hospital but could not be rescued.
The defender has obtained 50 caps for Portugal’s national team and brought more than 500 high career appearances, the majority playing for Porto.
Ronaldo spoke to his compatriot on social media, posting a picture of Costa with the “Kiel Semper Jorge Costa” line, which translates as “as long as forever” or “always”.
On Wednesday, the Fenerbahce Mourinho boss, who fought back tears at a press conference before the third round of the third round of Champions League against Feyenoord, said: “I’m very sad. It’s part of my story to go.
“If he could talk to me now he would say” Make your press conference, tomorrow play the Mister game and win the game-forget me. “
“I’m going to try to do my job today and tomorrow, and then I get up after.”
Costa won 24 trophies in his time in Porto, including eight Primeira Liga titles. He was one of the six players who won five consecutive leagues of the Portuguese flight championships.
He had a short spell in England with Charlton Athletic, who made 26 appearances after arriving on loan during the 2001/2002 season.
“Throughout his life, both on the pitch and outside, Jorge Costa has incorporated the values that define FC Porto: dedication, leadership, passion and spirit of conquest that cannot be purchased,” Porto said in a statement. “He left his mark on generations of fans and became a symbol of the portismo.”
“Jorge Costa’s legacy always survives in the memory of all Porto fans. It will never be forgotten, master.”
Two other players in Porto and Portugal, Deco and Pepe, also called the player.
Deco called Costa one of the greatest symbols of Portuguese football, adding: “It was an honor to share so many titles and joy with you. Your name will remain remembered forever. My condolences to the whole family.”
Meanwhile, Pepe said: “Your dedication and inheritance always live in the unparalleled story of FC Porto’s victories. Rest in peace, Jorge Costa.”
