Former US President Bill Clinton will return home for Christmas after being released from a Washington hospital where he was being treated for the flu.
The 78-year-old Democrat was admitted Monday afternoon with a fever.
A spokesman said Clinton was released Tuesday with a thank you for the care he received at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital.
The spokesman said Clinton sends her warmest wishes for a happy and healthy holiday season to everyone. Clinton, who served two terms as president between 1993 and 2001, is campaigning this fall for Vice President Kamala Harris in her presidential bid.
In the years since Clinton left the White House, he has faced some health scares.
In 2004 he underwent quadruple bypass surgery after experiencing persistent chest pains and shortness of breath. Clinton returned to the hospital for surgery on a partially collapsed lung in 2005, and in 2010. he had a pair of coronary artery stents implanted.
Clinton responded by adopting a largely vegan diet, which caused him to lose weight and report improved health.
In 2021 the former president was hospitalized for six days in California while being treated for an infection unrelated to COVID-19 when the pandemic was still near its height.
